Themes

  1. Heritage
  • Heritage and Conservation of historic buildings and urban areas on different kinds of built heritage (water, culture, archaeology, local, industries, etc)
  • Contemporary Heritage (since the 1960s)
  • Practices that are posing a risk to the heritage value
  • Policies on heritage
  • Construction Technology
  1. The contribution of architectural practice to trends and heritage: how has the contemporary practice been shaping the built environment that may constitute a part of 'trends and heritage' ?
  2. Issues on land ownership and management: use of public land (e.g., government, guthi, etc.) and private land (for large-scale developments like housing, land pooling, urban design plans, etc.)
  3. Environmental/ecological, social, cultural, and economic aspects as interrelated but distinct aspects of sustainability and resilience

The four themes incorporate the central issues of architecture and urbanism in Nepal as we progress further in the twenty-first century. While 'Trends' signifies a more contemporary approach to architecture, 'Heritage' signifies both the historic past and recent developments. This conference hopes to bring together academics, researchers, and practitioners with an aim to discuss a new direction to the approach of 'Architectural Heritage' that goes beyond the conventional relation it has only with the 'historic past'. This call for participation seeks to gather interest from the professionals in private, government, and academic sectors whose work can contribute to a novel understanding of the word 'heritage'. As we are moving forward in the twenty-first century and with rapid changes to the way people live, architects and professionals in allied disciplines need to re-think the term 'heritage' with a borader lens and give attention to the topics that will become important for the future.
